Alexia Arthurs wrote one of the most celebrated short story collections of 2018, and I had the pleasure of meeting her this past November at the Miami Book Fair.
Her debut collection, How to Love A Jamaican, features stories about those who currently call the island home and those who've left Jamaica for what they hope will be a better life.
Alexia was born and raised in Jamaica and moved to the United States at 12. Her stories explore several topics including what is lost when a person leaves their homeland, the complicated relationship between mothers and daughters and, in a story inspired by Rihanna, the price of fame.
Interview Highlights:
Alexia reveals...
- Her inspiration for writing this collection
- Why she can't imagine writing some of the stories in her collection now
- How she was influenced by Sandra Cisneros
We'll send a free, signed copy of How to Love A Jamaican to the first listener to tell us both Sandra Cisneros novels that Alexia mentions during our interview. You can tweet us the answer @ReadMorePodcast or write it on our Facebook page.
If you have won a ReadMore giveaway in the last 90 days, you're ineligible. If we ever sold band fruit together, you're probably ineligible. ReadMore does not have a friends and family plan. But we'll always have that trip to Disney and all those Christmas parades.
Click here to purchase the book. When you buy using this link, you support Alexia and the production of the show.
EDITED TO ADD: On February 1, Ruth Baker posted the correct response on our Facebook page and won a free, signed copy of Alexia's short story collection.
